Caring for a pregnant dog is an essential part of the breeding process.
During the time leading up to the birth of the pups, they need a silent, tranquil atmosphere to rest and eat, free of dirt or bacteria.
This atmosphere provides less stress and anxiety for her than she already has to go through during her pregnancy.
Creating the right atmosphere also helps the right development of the pups and provides a healthy start for them risk free of germs and infections.
Step by Step
Let your dog rest as much as she needs to, this is a unique time and tiredness can be common.
Feed Well. When feeding, prepare food for more than one, so more than you usually serve her. Seek advice form your veterinarian.
Keep her away from contact with other dogs especially of the male persuasion.
For birth, create a large cardboard box with newspapers on the floor and a cushion, to make it the most comfortable as possible.
During birth be close to her in case anything comes up. Check with your Vet for other tips and advice on a constant basis, make frequent
appointments to get her checked.
Serve 2/3 of cottage cheese in her food for every 1 1/2 - 2 cups of food you serve, for the extra calcium she will need when lactating. Ground up calcium is also good but wait for your Vet’s advice on the servings.
Be aware of the 24hr veterinarian’s offices near your area just in case you dog is giving birth late at night and you need to rush her there.
During this time, avoid letting her jump on the bed or high places or furniture, jumping can cause unwanted complications at birth.
Hygiene. Make sure she is clean, brush her teeth bi weekly and wash her eyes and ears, give her a large comfortable pillow to sleep in and provide filtered water for her.
Tips
During this time give your dog all natural treats and snacks like fruits and vegetables. Most dogs enjoy: carrots, apples, bananas, berries, papayas, broccoli, mangoes, canteloupe, honey dew melon, spinach, romaine lettuce, and much more!
Unless you know exactly what you’re doing, contact a vet first if complications arise.
Notes
•If you’re currently using flea preventative medicine, refrain from using it during her pregnancy, some can be harmful to the natural development of the pups.
•Be careful the types of foods that you give your dog. Grapes and raisins can be poisonous to some!
