How to Draw Better

If you’re looking to improve the outcome of your drawings and already have some of the basic techniques established, be ready to learn more unconventional techniques.

These techniques that you may not be familiar with could radically change and improve the speed and quality of your drawings.

Pro painters and drawing never stop learning new skills, so never rest on your laurels and always look to set the bar higher with your creativity and imagination.

Wheather you're looking to improve the realism of your work, develop your own style or even enhance the features of your cartoons, these techniques could help you get there. If you're dedicated and work smart, you will be able to impress those around you with your new found abilities and it could become one of the most fulfilling activities you have.

Choose a Style. Decide what kind of style you want to improve on before embarking on this journey of creative discovery. Realistic body and face sketching is very different to marvel caricature or mange style drawings, so decide what you want to get better at before continuing.

Use a Guide. The general trend for proportional drawing is using guides. These guides are made up of circles, rectangles and squares which you can then draw over with pen and rub out later with an eraser. This gives you a cushion for any mistakes and will save you time if you draw a great face but have a disproportionate body.

Observe the Human Form. If realism is your goal than studying anatomy and reading books on the human form is a great way to practice drawing the human form and or animal forms. Study DaVinci’s experimental sketches to get an idea of the best type of anatomical sketch mastery there is. Explore ball point pen art, this shows that the talent is in you, not in the materials you choose to use.

Take advantage of Shadow and Light. Shadows and light are areas to explore in detail to create 3 dimensions in your 2d work. It creates emotion and depth perception as well as personality in your characters.

To create these effects use a still life or a person who will be your model, where you’ll be able to see more closely how light bounces off the skin in reality. Use light strokes for lighter sections and stronger strokes for darker sections where the shadow is most cast.

Keep Practicing. Practice this and you can show your friends what you’ve accomplished with your hard work. Now you can draw your girlfriend and she’ll love you forever just like in Titanic!

Tips

Drawing is like learning to play an instrument, if you're born with the talent already, you can only improve upon it. It heals you, you can go to magical places when you play your music, or draw your environment.

I have a natural drawing ability which i have developed over time. Most people like me feel they already draw well so they stop practicing. This is the worst thing you can do. If you cultivate this talent, you can do some amazing things.

I've recently been looking at ball point pen art and it's a fantastic way to create masterpieces with basic mediums like ball point pens. Things people use everyday to create something fantastic and then call it an ink painting. People are always surprised you did it with just a regular pen.

If you have a natural ability you can develop it and cultivate it, if you don't you can learn and like anything in life, if you convince yourself that something is easy, it will be naturally more easy to accomplish, because everything that's hard will be taken away from your conscience.

The great thing about art and drawing is that if you're not trying to duplicate something in your environment then you're good. Whatever you draw on your canvas is good because it is from your imagination and things from your imagination can never be classified as wrong or right in art, it's pure creation.
