Other qualities such as weight and height depend on what you’re modeling.

Consider working with a fitness trainer, if you’re planning to become a regular on the cat walk or clothing campaigns. Choose your trainer wisely, someone who has a good reputation and experience with models. Tell those scouting you, your modeling goals and how you aspire to look.

Decide what kind of modeling you'd like to do. Technically, anybody can be a model. However, do remember that if you don't meet certain requirements, the work available to you will be very limited, and you may have to make up for it in other departments (reliability, technique, etc). An Underwear Model. If you have large breasts but small hips, you can be an underwear model. Other Types of Modeling. Don't fit any of the face or body descriptions? You can be a foot, hair or hand model. Consider your "look". There is more of a curvy California look, a “City? New York look, the girl next door, a “waif? Wait for professional shots rather than handing in amateur ones.

Get the photos taken professionally. Professional photography, even if it’s expensive, it’ll show you a better idea of what kind of look you project and if you’re photogenic. It’s a worthwhile investment for your future interviews.

Find a reputable modeling agency. They'll use this to compare to your head shot. Your measurements will be taken and you’ll be asked to walk, so be prepared for that. Learn to accept rejection or criticism politely and thank the people for their time.

Be professional. Be curtious and always be on time to any appointment or shoot. Don’t build your reputation around being late or rude. Be organized! Get a daily planner to make sure you never miss an appointment during those last minute phone calls.

Confirm if a make-up artist is on site. 99% of the time, there will be so come fresh faced. If for some odd reason there is no make up artist, you’re required to do your make up yourself.

Don’t be dishonest about your measurements just to book a shoot; your weight whether you are too large or skinny for the job, this is something you can’t hide so it’s best to be truthful from the beginning.

  Tips

Go with a reputable agency if you’re thinking about entering modeling contests.

If signing with an agency isn’t for you, you can go freelance but this has less safety measures and the pay is considerably low.

Have permission if you’re under age.

Go on raw talent and experience, modelling schools can teach you bad habits which are hard to undo and they can be expensive.

Have a website which is dedicated to spreading your name and which shows examples of your work.

Know your limits and don’t let people push you past those limits. Decide if you’re comfortable with full or partial nudity. Glamour, fashion and catalogue modeling are different fields so accept work that will not interfere with jobs in other modeling fields in the future.

See the clients face to face, bring your portfolio.

Show off your cool personality, have fun and know they are lucky to have you.

Build a portfolio by getting paid instead of paying expensive photographers by booking time-for-print work. Modeville is a good resource for beginner models to make connections with other models, make up artists and photographers who may know things you don’t.

When signing release for individual photos discuss what is to be done with your image to avoid any law suits or abuse of your image. Some contracts may require to model exclusively with one agency so only sign if you are sure.

Use sites where you can contact industry professionals and ask them pertinent questions about a working model. For example, Personal Model Management, PMM or a model chat room provide photo and portfolio advice, as well as management contracts.

Notes

•Don’t be discouraged by rejections. Top models get rejected about 70% for every job.

•If you become a world known top model and you don’t feel comfortable with requests like losing weight or plastic surgery, consider limiting your modeling work if you cannot handle the pressure. Your health isn’t worth a job.

•If you don’t work they don’t get paid so there is no incentive for them to find you work, be wary when you are asked to pay upfront. Always check with a model who is being represented by them and ask what they think of their representation.

•When invited to a foreign country for auditions or shoots, be sure to have funds for the return trip to avoid bad experiences. There are scams out there which use one way tickets to trap girls into prostitution rings when they can’t afford to return home.

•When working with people you have made contact with online, be sure to bring a chaperone to the shoot. If you can’t then do a background check on the person and their past work. Call somebody before and after the shoot as a safety measure.
