How to Tie a Tie

Surprisingly there are some men who don’t know how to tie a tie, and even the ones who do, have their knowledge limited to just one type of knot.

There are four different types of knots you can use to tie a tie. The four in Hand knot, the Pratt Knot, the Half Windsor Knot and the Windsor Knot.

The Four in Hand Knot usually goes well with button down shirts, the pratt and half windsor knot are good with any dress shirt, while the windsor knot goes great with spread collar shirts.

Each type of knot gives you freedom to use it with different styles of shirt. Each for different collar sizes and shirt fabrics suited for the type of appearance you’d like for any event, whether it be an interview or a graduation, being more knowledgeable about your tie options will give you more control over the way you look.

Step by Step

Hang the tie over your neck with the wider side over your right shoulder and the thinner side over your left shoulder.

Make sure the tie is placed underneath your collar (the wider side hangs lower over your right shoulder).

Put the wider (right) side over the thinner left side, then behind. Bring it around the front of the thinner side again (from right to left).

Then, bring the wider side up and under the loop, between both ends and down through the top knot pulling firmly downwards.

Pull up the bow while pulling the wider side of the tie downwards.

Make sure you do not tighten the tie too much, let it sit comfortably under your collar.

Centre the knot with both hands.
