First impressions of Drive is it’s purposeful slow pace. Flash backs of Grand theft Auto Vice City are rife. The intro sequence is very reminiscent of GTA VC with it’s bright pink typography, it’s 80’s music sound track and the protagonist’s flashy, bright jacket resembling similarly 80‘s throw back attire.
The plot is not very clear from the beginning which creates an air of mystery which is handled very well throughout the movie. Characters are introduced as they become important to the story and the acting takes over the writing as this script’s words are stripped down to the bare minimum necessary. The rest of the energy is created by the actors’ chemistry especially with the love connection that is struck up for the main character.
The regular mob cliche’s of a character’s demise before they leave town is repeated here and not unexpectedly; so much so, that surprises from cars not blowing up in parking lots, was very unexpected.
The only movies that Drive can be compared to is a less psychedelic experience than ‘Revolver’ tinged with a slight air of Jason born (The Bourne Identity) with an 80’s twist and a back drop of a suburban hard working, manufacturing city in middle america.
This movie stands out in 2011 as it’s a new take on the action/thriller movies of the past and steps into the realm of a seemingly independent movie with the budget of a blockbuster and it’s carefully selected shots and beautiful helicopter fly overs of the city and bright lights bouncing of the night sky.
Overall this is one of the best cinematographic films of the year.
