Unchartered 2 is based on the concept that honor amongst thieves does not exist. It’s a tale of modern day thieves which explore the ancient worlds while seeking hidden treasures from the past. The first thing that hits you about this game is it’s visuals; the graphics are tremendously realistic for its time, head and shoulders above any other highly sold game.
The plot lines along with it’s interlaced video clips which set you up really well before gaming commences aren’t the type you want to skip, these are very intriguing with it’s realism, cinematography as well as the score. These scenes are taken right out of Hollywood quality action/thriller movies and placed in this new conceptual reality.
The scenes absorb you into the story allowing you to size up the other characters in the story looking at who has the best poker face of them all, which then gets you pumped up for the game which places you in the role of the lead character and his intense action adventures.
Since the entire game is like an interactive movie and you’re like a modern day indiana jones, the transition between each video scene and the actual gameplay, is incredibly difficult to notice because the quality and resolution of the graphics does not change at all.
This seems to be done purposefully to show off the level of realism the game company has achieved and the fact that you can now choose your path throughout the game and everyone of your actions has a realistic reaction.
The Gameplay is helped by the quality of the visuals but in terms of physics and the character’s reaction to the world around him is of a high standard for its time. Despite this, in future we should expect incredible realism from games in terms of character’s movements based on the skeletal structure of the human body which can be used to great effect in an action-y game like this one.
One of the better things about this game is its difficulty level is set just right, that it isn’t to easy and is still challenging in many ways, but it’s objectives are clear. There is nothing worse than a game that’s missions are not clear from the get go.
The challenge should lie in figuring out how the character is going to get form point A to point B, not trying to figure out what he should be doing.
A game like this sucks you in very quickly with all of its great features and the fact that missions are very clear and the challenge lies in figuring out the relationships between the characters and completing the mission with stealth and ‘mission impossibility’.
The 3rd game that will complete this trilogy is set to be released in 2011 in time for christmas and will be competing against Batman Arkham City for its stunning visuals and gameplay.
Unchartered 3 promises to be even better than it predecessor and is ready to send the gaming world to new and improved heights of interaction and realism.
