If you’ve ever been caught doing something naughty and been embarrassed, there are some things you can do to avoid letting yourself look foolish.
It’ll take some time to get over it, but don’t take life too seriously, look at the humor in situations and later you’ll laugh about it.
If the situation calls for it, run! But if the offense isn't that serious, there are some techniques you can use to handle yourself well, if you're confronted.
It might seem easy to be embarrassed if you're caught doing something you shouldn't and sometimes hiding it isn't enough.
Sometimes it's best just to not think too much of it, not get defensive and let the other person do most of the talking.
If you can make the other person laugh, you're golden! Humor is one of the best tools for handling many awkward or dull situations.
Step by Step
Give a subtle message. If you’re caught by a family member you can use this too. If it’s someone you hardly know, use this with caution. If they ask you what you were doing, glare at them and if they try and shout at you or discipline you act like you don’t care. Occasionally make eye contact with them and have a look of ‘do you think i care?’.
Don't be intimidated. If you’re in a situation where they are giving you serious ‘advice’ don’t look intimidated, regretful or ashamed or scared. Keep your body relaxed and answer any questions with confidence, look away from where you’re looking at as if it’s not worth looking at (ie. their face). If you can’t then just explain why you did it.
Don't push your luck. If you’re aren’t severely punished and get off with a suspension or a grounding, don’t push it any further. Have your respect questioned but not your mental health or sanity. If you become homeless or jobless, remember this was your fault.
Don't dig a hole. When dealing with the police don’t struggle or run away. This will only get you hurt and arrested so come clean and cooperate. If you are innocent and run away, police are allowed to catch or restrain you for questioning in any way they see fit so just be cooperative.
Tips
If you’ve been caught doing something that will send you to prison or have a court appearance, don’t follow this article, just be as cooperative as you can.
If it’s something less serious when you’re being talked to don’t make a remark or gesture as if the person is wrong, this is overdoing it.
Be cool and avoid putting the blame on someone other than yourself when you’ve been caught red handed.
If you already have plans to go through with your naughty deed, come up with an explanation of where, when and why, in case you get caught.
